“Making Coffee”

One morning I filmed an ex-boyfriend making coffee while I was still in bed. At the time I could not imagine ever sharing the love and intimacy I felt for him with anyone else. But two years later I found myself in the same bed looking out on the same kitchen while another man was making coffee. The love and intimacy I felt two years earlier suddenly appeared to me to be exchangeable, which was incredibly sad. So I filmed exactly the same coffee making process again – the same view of the same kitchen from the same bed. Only the man making the coffee is different.
I then edited the footage to alternate and combine these two men – as one leaves the frame, the other enters it, so that within the same footage, two entirely different times and personalities combine, unified by the simple process of coffee-making, as well as the video itself.

Ooit heb ik mijn ex-vriend gefilmd terwijl ik in bed lag en hij koffie aan het zetten was. Op dat moment kon ik mij niet voorstellen dat ik die liefde en intimiteit ooit nog met iemand anders dan met hem zou delen. Twee jaar later lag ik in datzelfde bed naar dezelfde keuken te kijken terwijl er een andere man koffie aan het zetten was. Die intimiteit en liefde die ik twee jaar daarvoor had gevoeld bleek toch inwisselbaar. Dit stemde mij erg treurig. Ik heb toen precies hetzelfde koffiezet proces nog een keer gefilmd. Hetzelfde uitzicht, hetzelfde bed, dezelfde keuken alleen de man die koffie zet is een andere. Deze beelden heb ik door elkaar heen gemonteerd zodat oude en nieuwe liefde samen koffie zetten.
